Wild Pear Beach, Combe Martin, Exmoor National Park

Beautiful, remote beach in the Combe Martin area of Exmoor National Park

Wild Pear Beach is one of the many remote beaches that line the Bristol Channel in Exmoor National Park. Set below high cliffs and the wonderful Little Hangman, this coarse sand, stone and rock beach is accessible by a steep path (and only if the path hasn’t been swept away by a landslide) or by kayak from Combe Martin. Great place. It’s also a nudist beach.

Location of Wild Pear Beach

Great Hangman is the highest sea cliff in the Westcountry and England. Located in the western section of Exmoor, close to the National Park border and Combe Martin, it descends to Little Hangman and then an arc of cliffs at the bottom of which is Wild Pear Beach. Combe Martin Beach is just west. Combe Martin Bay pushes out into the Bristol Channel.

We’ve positioned Wild Pear Beach on Google maps. Zoom in on the ‘Satellite’ setting to see its location.

Directions to, and parking at, Wild Pear Beach

Start from the car park behind Combe Martin Beach. Follow the South West Coast Path in the direction of the distinctive Little Hangman. You’ll see Wild Pear Beach below to your left. Take the path that zig-zags down the cliff to the beach. This path is visible on Google’s satellite imagery. It gets steep and there’s a rope to help you down to the back of the beach. Note that the coast gets battered by storms and landslides wash away the access path. For example, we turned back in 2020 when photographing the area owing to landslides. The same thing happened at Wringcliff Bay Beach by The Valley of Rocks and Sillery Sands (Beach) just east of Lynmouth.

You can also sea kayak in from Combe Martin.

Wild Pear Beach

The coarse sand, stone and rock beach set below high cliffs is typical of beaches in this area of Exmoor and North Devon.

Wild Pear Beach is one of the Westcountry’s many naturist beaches.

It’s also great to view the beach on a boat trip or RIB ride from Ilfracombe.
