Broadsands Beach, Combe Martin, Exmoor National Park
One of the most beautiful beach settings in the Westcountry
Broadsands Beach, also referred to as Broad Strand Beach, is one of the most beautiful beach settings in the Westcountry and, arguably, the UK. When the sun's out, it looks like a beach in Thailand. Situated below towering and heavily wooded cliffs, it provides fine views of Combe Martin Bay. It's an amazing place that's highly recommended but it does take a bit of effort to get there via over 200 cliff steps.
Location of Broadsands Beach
Broadsands Beach is located on the North Devon coast by the borders of Exmoor National Park and the North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The stunning Watermouth, Watermouth Cove, Watermouth Cove Holiday Park and Watermouth Valley Camping Park are just west. The popular Exmoor gateway village Combe Martin is to the east.
We've positioned Broadsands Beach on Google maps. Zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its location.
Directions to, and parking at, Broadsands Beach
If you're staying at one of the many holiday parks and campsites at Watermouth, walk east on the South West Coast Path. There's a famous viewpoint just east of Watermouth Valley Camping Park. You look down at Broadsands Beach and across Combe Martin Bay to Little Hangman on the Exmoor coast. Continue on the South West Coast Path and very soon you'll see a sign reading 'Welcome to Broadsands Beach Cliff Steps'. Over 200 steps take you down to the beach.
If you're coming from Combe Martin by car, use the car parking area behind the main beach in the village. Follow the South West Coast Path west behind Combe Martin Newbury Beach and then above Sandy Bay and Golden Cove until you come to the abovementioned sign. Take the steps down to the beach.
Broadsands Beach/Broad Strand Beach
If you're on holiday in Exmoor or exploring Westcountry beaches then Broadsands Beach is essential visiting. Over 200 steps take you down heavily wooded cliffs to the back of the beach. Take care. Whilst there are hand railings, the cliff steps are steep. Clearly, it's a bit of an effort to get back up to the South West Coast Path.
The setting is amazing. At low tide, a big coarse sand and stone beach slopes down to the sea. The beach curls around the coastline offering top views across Combe Martin Bay to Combe Martin and Little Hangman.
Check tide times. There's much more to explore and see at low tide.
If this type of beach is of interest, also visit Sandy Cove (Beach) which is just west of Lee Beach on the North Devon coast. It's a mini version of Broadsands Beach and less well known.
